Cold outbound is dead. Demand capture is what works in 2026.

Open rates at 12%. Replies under 1%. Your buyers stopped reading cold emails years ago. They are still buying. Here is where they actually are, and how to reach them.

Most B2B teams are still sending cold emails.

They wonder why nothing works.

Here are the numbers nobody wants to print:

  • Cold email open rate: 12%
  • Cold email reply rate: under 1%
  • Cold LinkedIn DM reply rate: 2 to 4%
  • Cold call connect rate: 8% on a good day

Your average reply on a cold campaign costs more than your trial.

The math broke years ago. Most teams pretended otherwise.

What changed

Two things.

  1. Buyers stopped reading cold messages.
  2. They started leaving public signals everywhere.

Every day, your future customers do one of these in public:

  • Like a competitor's launch post
  • Comment on a pain thread
  • Subscribe to a newsletter in your category
  • Follow a thought leader
  • Show up at an event
  • Post that they got promoted
  • Announce funding

Each one is a sales signal.

Each one tells you who is paying attention.

Most teams ignore them all.

The new motion

There is a different way to do this. We call it demand capture.

It runs on three steps.

Find. Pull buyers from a public signal. Not a list. Not a scraper. A real signal where someone did something.

Engage. Warm them through your content. Not a DM. Not a pitch. Something that makes them recognize your name.

Convert. DM after the warm signal. Not before. Not blindly. After.

That is the whole motion.

Why it works

Buyers do not hate sellers. They hate strangers asking for their time.

If you show up once, you are a stranger.

If you show up three times in their feed before you DM, you are familiar.

Familiar gets a reply. Strangers get archived.

The bet

Pick one signal next week.

A competitor launch post is fine. A funded-founder list is fine. A niche newsletter audience is fine.

Take that list. Drop a thoughtful comment under three of their posts. Wait a week. Send a DM that references one of the posts you commented on.

Track replies.

Compare to your cold rate.

Whatever number comes back, that is the rate you should have been running at the whole time.

The buyers were always there. You just had to stop yelling and start showing up.
